关于千丛果的来历，还有一段传说。传说韩愈曾三次到灵山回访大颠。其中一次适逢炎夏，大颠命徒到山下买岭南荔枝让韩愈解渴。韩愈却说：“寺院附近，皆为沃地，乃植荔佳土，师为何捧着金饭碗讨饭？”大颠听了，甚觉有理，逐命众徒在山坡植荔枝。后来的灵山寺荔枝林就被定为八景之一--“千丛果”。
